The first thing we noticed about our new neighbourhood in Chennai was not only its hatred towards neatness but also these dogs.On the very first day we were scared to get out of the house because of them. Then Neethu recollected ,even in Mangalore we could find so many dogs .There it was the stray dogs sleeping on the road side. They were not even disturbed of the rushing cars to the Mangalore club or the pedestrians. But those passive dogs and our new neighbours are way too far relatives.
These 'smart'(yes, dats it) dogs ne'er fit to the term stray dogs. They are the securities in charge of the whole residential area. The three who are responsible for our part usually lies down under the neem trees leaning to the road from our compound. We started referring 'our dalmatian' the one with black n white mark all over its body, second one 'our Alsatian' and the third 'our pug'.
But at 'party time' they would have a lot of companions of all kind .They have only one thing in common, they all are street dogs.
Once on a fine sun day morning we saw these dogs resting under the neem tree as usual.Suddenly all the three spring up and started barking staring to a pocket road.Within no time many joined them ,like acting as a team on time of a catastrophe. After some two or three minutes emerged a stout man with a walking stick in his hands .Beside him was a dog as stout as its owner with a neck collar indicating its noble birth. The heavy white dog, seemed to be highly loyal to his master, tried to confront these street guys. But in front of a gang of 15 'roaring lions' ,ready to tear him in to meat balls , it tried to hide behind the master. The whole battalion covered the entrance of the road .At last the born with silver spoon guy gave up and ran away.We could see it waiting for his master at the other end of the road.I regretted for not having a handy cam for the first time then.
They ne'er barked at any of the residents,ne'er to any of the guests in ironed cloths. But if some one with a torn cloths and untidy attire appears they would chase them out of the area.(This is were they score a minus ten) .Once a family of folk people came walking in a very fast pace. The dogs started barking loud till they disappeared. Then the 'cow boys' turned suddenly back to their work as nothing happened.
It is the best thing about them.We haven't ever noticed them gossipping.Once their work is over, team disperses .
Once a huge Crane entered the road with much difficulty. The driver some how kept its arms folding and unfolding to manage through. Some others who followed it shouted directions 'left','right a bit'......But the driver couldn't hear anything. Then came the dogs.Barking from behind the crane, running from here and there as if to make sure it doesn't hit anything. The same happens when some one has a confusion in turning their car.
Now a days its our favourite pass time to watch them.Since it was Neethu who gave them the breed names ,me and Fathima call them Neethu's dogs.
